Digital Media BlogNew online music store opensPosted: 2/11/2005 Michael Robertson, the found of MP3.com back in 1997, has just launched a new music store based on the sale of high-quality music from independent artists in mp3 format, with no DMR (digital rights management). Songs can be downloaded for 88 cents each, or $8.88 for a full CD. Also available are free preview samples for each song. I'm hoping that this launch will demonstrate to the music industry that it is indeed possible to sell music online while not micro-managing the use of the downloaded tracks. And even though this will kick all those $.99 a track stores in the pants, it's still too much money. Typically, artists get very little from CD sales. It should be possible to significantly increase their per-customer revenue, while still providing much lower prices for internet customers, simply by removing the packaging costs and the various middlemen (namely, the record label). A review of MP3tunes.com can can be found at thedigitalmusicweblog.
