Why I hate proprietary batteries

Posted: 1/21/2005

I have two digital cameras, a full-sized SLR-style Minolta DiMage 7Hi, which takes regular-sized AA batteries, and a much smaller Pentax Optio 430RS, which has its own proprietary battery and charger. For the past year, this nice little camera has been a paperweight, because I can't find the charger. I *think* I may have left it in a hotel room last winter. I could order a new one from the manufacturer, but it would cost almost a third the price of a brand new camera.

Please, digital camera manufacturers, standardize on a small battery across brands, and don't keep changing it every year unless you have a significant reason, such as newer longer-life technology.
